So You Want to Be a Rock Climber. You’ve seen it on the news. All your friends have talked about trying it. You’ve found the perfect site (aka Rock Climbing Gym Denver CO). But, you’re still worried: do you have what it takes to go rock climbing?
First off, good news. You don’t have to be a bodybuilder, or even an athlete to begin rock climbing. Rock climbing is for everyone – young and old, large and small. All you really need is the time and motivation to head out and try it. That said, nobody likes feeling lost while they’re learning the ropes, so we’ve compiled a list of helpful tips and tricks to get you started:
1. It’s all about the feet.
While the arms are the logical focus of many beginning climbers, this is an adage every experienced rock climber will tell you. Why? Because learning the proper footwork relieves the strain on your forearms, and allows you to reposition your body to better reach the next handholds. 2. The arms matter too.
Ah yes. Finally something logical. Rock climbing, obviously, requires upper body strength. You have none, you say? Good news: it’s easy to improve, and it doesn’t require a gym! For starters, try adding push-ups, pull-ups, and tricep dips into your workout. All three of these exercises target antagonist muscles, which are vital when it comes to climbing!
3. And so does your core.
At this point, you may be wondering why we didn’t just say be in shape from the start. While good physical fitness is not a prerequisite to beginning climbing, improving your fitness will undoubtedly improve your climbing skills as well. Especially when it comes to your core. These often neglected muscles allows for improved footwork along with greater body control while climbing, Not sure where to start? Try planks! If these are too easy, lift one leg and the opposite arm off of the ground for a minute at a time, then switch!
4. Climbing is a mental sport!
At first glance, it would seem that climbing is simply a feat of strength. in reality, however, it is really all about strategy. While seeing a path to the top looks easy from the ground, it’s vastly different when you’re on the wall, staring up from a poor vantage point at the rocks above and trying to determine the proper direction. What’s even harder is making it partway up the face, only to discover that the route you chose does not lead to the top. In these moments, it is vital to be able to step back, reverse your steps, and try again. This mental stamina will set you apart.
5. Practice makes perfect!
As with anything, the true key to improving your climbing game is sticking with it. Optimally, practicing 2-3 times per week will hone your body while creating your unique cadence. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s go climb!
