We often go through phases in our lives where it seems like we cannot get a grip on our time. Between living, working, running a home, and managing a family, it can seem like we don’t have a spare minute for ourselves. It’s important, however, to make this time for the activities we enjoy most. A research paper released in 2018 found that the happiest people enjoyed two and a half hours of free time a day. This may seem impossible to you, so we’ve put together five easy ways to help you to free up time in your daily life. What are you waiting for?
Drop and delegate
We often don’t realise the number of things we do out of obligation, rather than want. For people-pleasers, especially, it can be difficult to not offer your services to someone in their time of need, or to say ‘no’ to requests. Make a list of your ‘obligations’ and put them into categories. Those tasks you absolutely don’t want to do? Drop them! Your friends and family will have to accept that you need time for you. Other tasks which need doing, but aren’t as important as your priorities, need delegating. There’s sure to be a more appropriate person for the task who would love to help you free up your day.
Batch your tasks
One of the benefits of free time is that you become able to think mindfully. You can assess everything you want to achieve and decide the most time-effective way to manage these tasks. Batching tasks is the answer; it helps you to focus on one area of your life at a time and prevent obsessive multi-tasking. You may already batch tasks at work but try it in your personal life. All of your errands, for example, could be completed on one particular trip or day of the week.
Pause before answering
Depending on your personality, you may be accustomed to saying ‘yes’ to everything anyone asks. Next time someone makes a request, have a go at saying ‘I’ll get back to you’. This isn’t a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’, and it gives you time to make an informed decision. It’s perfectly reasonable to take some time to consider the request, or to judge your calendar nearer the time.
Keep your free time, free
Your defined time off should be considered as set-in-stone as any other appointment and should be as obligation-free as possible. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that you have the entire day to do exactly as you desire in that moment. There may be certain activities you’relooking forward to, but don’t schedule them and remove the spontaneity.
